Aviation English (COMPASS)

Copy the clearance

COMPASS Aviation English (optional module): listen to ATC transmissions delivered in a variety of accents, then answer multiple-choice questions on each one — callsign, frequency, QNH, runway, flight level, heading and squawk. Some messages contain a 'break' and carry clearances for two different aircraft. Tests listening comprehension in an aviation context.

What to expect

  • Spoken ATC transmissions, each in a different voice and accent.
  • One multiple-choice question after each message — you won't know which detail until it appears.
  • Answer options that differ by a single digit.
  • Messages with a 'break' carrying two aircraft's clearances.

What it measures

  • Listening comprehension
  • Aviation English & R/T phraseology
  • Holding detail from spoken messages

Instructions

  1. 1Wear headphones in a quiet room — each message plays once (one replay allowed).
  2. 2Note the callsign first, then the numbers that follow it.
  3. 3On a 'break' message, keep track of which clearance belongs to which aircraft.
  4. 4Selecting an answer locks it and advances after 1 second.

Tips

  • Learn the phonetic alphabet and number pronunciation cold.
  • Frequencies, QNH and squawk codes are where marks are lost — the wrong answers differ by one digit.
  • Practise with real ATC recordings.
