Orientation (COMPASS)

Read three instruments, place the aircraft

COMPASS Orientation (Bearings): interrogate three aircraft instruments — a Direction Indicator, an Artificial Horizon and a Relative Bearing Indicator — and pick the one aircraft (of four) whose heading, bank and position around the central beacon match all three. Tests spatial awareness and combined instrument reading.

What to expect

  • Three instruments: DI (heading), Artificial Horizon (bank), RBI (beacon bearing).
  • Four aircraft around a central beacon to choose from.
  • Only one matches heading, bank and position.
  • An explanation after every answer.

What it measures

  • Spatial awareness
  • Reading three instruments together
  • Mental rotation & bearing

Instructions

  1. 1DI — which way is the black aircraft pointing? Match the nose.
  2. 2Artificial Horizon — is it banking left, level or right? Match the green arrow's tilt.
  3. 3Bearing Indicator — the yellow arrow points from the aircraft towards the beacon, so the aircraft sits on the opposite side of it.
  4. 4One contradicting instrument rules an answer out.

Tips

  • Arrow down-and-right means the beacon is down-right of the aircraft — so the aircraft is the one in the top-left.
  • On the horizon, the outer blue/brown ring is fixed — the inner disc is the part that tilts.
  • Work all three cues — two aircraft often share a heading, so the beacon direction is the decider.
