Rotating Cubes (DLR)

Track the cross by ear

DLR Rotating Cubes (ROT): a blue cross is marked on one face of a cube. A spoken instruction gives the starting face, then a run of four to seven tipping commands — left, right, front or back. Track the cross through the rotations in your head and pick the face it finishes on from six cube diagrams.

You're all set — start whenever you're ready.

What to expect

  • Every instruction delivered as audio — nothing is written down.
  • A starting face for the cross, then 4–7 rotation commands.
  • Six answer tiles — Front, Back, Left, Right, Top and Bottom — each showing the blue cross on that face.
  • Answers locked until the audio has finished playing.
  • Longer command runs as the test goes on.

What it measures

  • Mental rotation
  • Auditory working memory
  • Spatial transformation under load

Instructions

  1. 1Left tips the cube onto its left edge; Right onto its right edge.
  2. 2Front tips it forward over its front edge; Back tips it backward over its back edge.
  3. 3Update the cross's face after each command — don't try to hold the whole sequence and replay it at the end.
  4. 4Selecting an answer moves you straight on to the next question.

Tips

  • Left and Right never move a cross that is on the front or back face; Front and Back never move one on the left or right face. Half the commands are often free.
  • Say the current face to yourself after every command — that single word is all you need to carry.
  • Headphones make the command run far easier to follow.
