Read the FMC, key it back

COMPASS Memory: an aviation short-term memory task. An FMC-style panel shows four values — Altitude, Heading, Speed and Frequency — for 5 seconds; then some are blanked and you have 10 seconds to key the missing ones back in. Up to all four can be missing at once.

What to expect

  • Four labelled values shown for 5 seconds.
  • 1 to 4 of them blanked for recall.
  • 10 seconds to key the missing values on the keypad.
  • A cursor steps you through each blank in turn.

What it measures

  • Short-term memory
  • Numerical recall
  • Recall under time pressure

Instructions

  1. 1Memorise all four values while they're shown.
  2. 2When they blank, type each missing value and press Enter.
  3. 3The ▶ cursor moves to the next blank automatically.
  4. 4Values still shown are your reference — only the blanks are scored.

Tips

  • Chunk the digits (e.g. 60-00) to hold more.
  • Don't forget the decimal on the frequency.
