Almost every route into an airline flight deck now runs through a computer-based aptitude battery. This guide explains what those tests actually measure, how the three dominant systems — cut-e (Aon), COMPASS and DLR — differ from one another, how scoring works, and how to prepare in a way that changes your result rather than just filling time.

What is a pilot aptitude test?

A pilot aptitude test is a battery of short, timed exercises delivered on a computer, used to decide whether a candidate has the raw abilities a flight deck demands. Airlines and flight schools use them early in selection because training a pilot is enormously expensive, and aptitude predicts training outcomes far better than qualifications or interviews alone.

The critical thing to understand is that these are aptitude tests, not knowledge tests. There is no syllabus. You are not being asked what you know about aviation — you are being asked how quickly and accurately your brain and hands do certain things under pressure. That has two consequences. First, you cannot revise your way to a pass. Second, and more usefully, the thing that separates a poor score from a good one is very often familiarity rather than ability: candidates who have never seen a continuous tracking task or a genuine multitasking test spend their first attempt working out the rules instead of performing.

Batteries typically run back to back over a couple of hours, with a short briefing before each test and a fixed window to complete as much as you can. Sustained, accurate performance across the whole session matters as much as peak performance on any single test.

The three main test batteries

Which one will you sit?

There is no reliable shortcut here, and getting it wrong is expensive. The assessment you face depends on the organisation, the programme and often the year — providers change systems, and some operators mix components from more than one. Work it out in this order:

  1. Read the invitation. Assessment invitations usually name the provider or link to their candidate information.
  2. Check the provider's own candidate pages. Aon and DLR both publish preparation material and sample items for candidates.
  3. Ask the recruiter. A direct question about which battery you will sit is entirely reasonable and is answered more often than candidates expect.
  4. Ask other candidates. Cadet cohorts and pilot forums are usually current, though treat second-hand accounts as indicative rather than definitive.

If you genuinely cannot find out, prepare the abilities rather than the format: mental arithmetic, spatial reasoning, working memory and multitasking appear in some form in all three systems, so time spent there is never wasted.

The abilities being measured

Strip away the branding and the same handful of abilities are being probed by all three batteries:

  • Numerical fluency — fast, accurate mental arithmetic, and speed-distance-time work done without a calculator.
  • Spatial reasoning and orientation — rotating shapes in your head, reading instruments, and knowing where you are relative to something else.
  • Working memory — holding several items in mind while doing something else with them, then recalling them accurately.
  • Attention and monitoring — noticing the one thing that changed in a busy display, and staying sharp when very little is happening.
  • Psychomotor control — smooth, continuous hand-eye tracking, often with a joystick or stick control.
  • Multitasking capacity — the headline ability, and the one candidates most underestimate: flying a task while answering unrelated questions, with both scored.
  • English and communication — aviation English comprehension, especially where radio-style audio is used.

Multitasking deserves special mention. In every one of these batteries, the tests that discriminate hardest are the ones where two or three demands run at once. They feel chaotic the first time and much less so the fifth, which is precisely why practising them pays.

What assessment day looks like

The aptitude battery is normally one part of a longer day or a multi-stage process. A typical shape:

  1. Online screening — sometimes the first aptitude tests are sat remotely and unsupervised, with a supervised re-test later to confirm the result.
  2. The aptitude battery — the computer-based tests, usually a couple of hours, back to back with short briefings.
  3. Group exercises — where used, assessing communication and teamwork rather than aptitude.
  4. Interview — motivation, background, and often technical or scenario questions.
  5. Simulator assessment — for some programmes, a basic handling check in a fixed-base sim.
  6. Medical and reference checks.

Aptitude is usually the hardest gate and the earliest, which is why it is worth disproportionate preparation effort: everything else on the list only happens if you clear it.

How you are scored

Raw scores mean little on their own, so results are standardised — commonly into percentiles or stanines (a 1–9 scale where 5 is average) — allowing a tracking task and a maths test to be compared on the same footing. Those standardised scores are then combined, usually weighted towards the abilities most predictive of success in the specific role.

Two practical consequences follow. First, there is rarely a single published pass mark, so treat any specific figure you read online — including ours — as indicative. Second, many operators set minimum scores in particular areas on top of the overall requirement. That means your weakest required ability can fail you outright, no matter how strong the rest of your profile is. It is the single strongest argument for spending your practice time on what you are worst at rather than what you enjoy.

Accuracy is also usually weighted more heavily than raw speed, and several systems penalise wrong answers. Rushing into errors is a common and avoidable way to lose marks.

How to prepare

  1. Identify your battery first. Everything else is more efficient once you know whether you are preparing for cut-e, COMPASS or DLR.
  2. Learn the formats before you chase scores. Sit each test once with no pressure, purely to understand what it asks. This is the single highest-return hour of preparation you will do.
  3. Build accuracy, then speed. A fast method built on shaky accuracy falls apart the moment the clock is real.
  4. Attack your weakest areas. Minimum-score requirements mean your worst ability sets your ceiling. This is uncomfortable and it is where the marks are.
  5. Rehearse the psychomotor and multitasking tests properly. They improve the most with practice and are the ones you can least afford to meet cold.
  6. Then practise under real timing, and finally run tests back to back so the fatigue and pacing of a full session are not a surprise.
  7. Sleep and arrive early. Genuinely: these are tests of processing speed and sustained attention, both of which are degraded more by tiredness than by anything you could have revised.

An eight-week study plan

A realistic framework if you have around two months before your assessment:

  • Weeks 1–2 — orientation and baseline. Sit every test in your battery once. Record honest scores. Identify your three weakest abilities and do not flinch from what you find.
  • Weeks 3–4 — foundations. Drill numerical and reasoning work for method and reliability, not speed. Add short daily mental arithmetic away from the app.
  • Week 5 — spatial, memory and attention. These respond quickly to repetition, so a concentrated week moves them noticeably.
  • Week 6 — psychomotor and multitasking. The heaviest lifting. Expect to feel incompetent for the first few sessions; that is what improvement looks like here.
  • Week 7 — timed pressure. Everything under strict timing, and start chaining tests back to back.
  • Week 8 — full rehearsals, then taper. Run complete sessions, shore up anything still short, then ease off for the final two or three days so you arrive fresh rather than fried.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Preparing for the wrong battery. The most expensive mistake on this list, and completely avoidable by asking.
  • Chasing speed over accuracy. Fast and wrong scores nothing, and some systems penalise it explicitly.
  • Practising only what you are good at. It feels productive and moves your score least.
  • Avoiding the multitasking and tracking tests because they are uncomfortable. They are uncomfortable for everyone, and they discriminate hardest.
  • Never rehearsing back to back. Isolated practice misses the fatigue that shapes real performance.
  • Treating the first attempt as a trial run. Reattempt policies are often restrictive and sometimes prohibit a second go entirely.
  • Trusting outdated forum posts. Formats change. Verify against the provider's current candidate information.
