Tracked Memory (DLR)

Hear it forwards, key it backwards

DLR Tracked Memory (RMS): a run of randomly-generated digits is read aloud, and you key them back in REVERSE order on a keypad within 20 seconds. Sequences grow through the run. Tests memory recall and mental manipulation of a held sequence.

What to expect

  • Digits read out one at a time, once only.
  • A keypad with DEL and OK to enter your answer.
  • 20 seconds per task to key the reversed sequence.
  • Sequences of five or six digits.

What it measures

  • Working memory
  • Reverse recall
  • Holding a sequence under time pressure

Instructions

  1. 1Listen to the whole sequence before you start entering anything.
  2. 2Enter the digits in reverse — last heard goes in first.
  3. 3Press OK to submit, or DEL to correct a digit.
  4. 4Every digit is scored, so enter what you have even if you lost part of it.

Tips

  • Rehearse the sequence backwards as it is read, rather than storing it forwards and flipping at the end.
  • Chunk longer runs into pairs — it is far easier to reverse two chunks than seven digits.
  • A partly-correct answer still earns marks, so never leave it blank.
