The result is a profile across abilities rather than a single number, and organisations tend to care about the shape of that profile as much as its average.

Compared with cut-e, COMPASS feels more conventional and less like a set of video games — but the control tasks are demanding, and the mathematics is genuinely time-pressured.

Who uses COMPASS

The most common context is flight school entry screening. Many training organisations require a COMPASS pass before offering a place, both to protect their own training statistics and to avoid taking money from candidates unlikely to complete. Some airlines and cadet programmes use it or components of it as well.

The practical implication is that COMPASS often comes very early — before you have any aviation experience to fall back on, and sometimes before you have thought seriously about aptitude testing at all. Candidates frequently sit it with no preparation because nobody told them it could be prepared for. It can.

The structure of the battery

The control tasks: what actually works

Control and Slalom are where unprepared candidates lose the most, and the failure mode is remarkably consistent: over-correction. Faced with a target drifting away, the instinct is a large, fast input, which overshoots, which demands an opposite input, and within seconds you are oscillating rather than tracking.

What works is the opposite. Small, early, anticipatory corrections. Watch where the target is going rather than where it is, lead it slightly, and accept a small steady error instead of chasing a perfect one. Pilots describe this as flying attitude rather than chasing the needle, and it is a learnable habit — but only if you have practised long enough for the panic response to fade.

Practise these in short sessions rather than long ones. Fifteen focused minutes several times a week will improve your tracking far more than an occasional hour, because the skill consolidates between sessions.

How to prepare for COMPASS

  1. Revise the technical content properly. Forces, moments, levers, pulleys, pressure, basic electricity and motion. This is the most revisable part of any major pilot battery and it is frequently neglected.
  2. Drill speed-distance-time and fuel calculations until they are automatic. Mental arithmetic without a calculator underpins the maths component.
  3. Practise the control tasks in short, frequent sessions, concentrating on small anticipatory corrections rather than on score.
  4. Train memory with interference. Recalling a list is easy; recalling it after being made to do something else is the actual task.
  5. Listen to aviation English in varied accents. Real radio exchanges are the best preparation — the difficulty in the English component is usually accent and pace, not vocabulary.
  6. Rehearse the full sequence once you are comfortable with the parts, so the length of the session is not itself a shock.

Common mistakes

  • Arriving unprepared because nobody said you could prepare. The most common story in COMPASS, and the most avoidable.
  • Over-correcting in the control tasks. Large inputs feel decisive and produce oscillation.
  • Skipping the technical revision. It is straightforward content and it is marks you are simply choosing not to take.
  • Reaching for a calculator in practice. You will not have one, so train without one from the start.
  • Ignoring the English component if you are a native speaker. The difficulty is accent and pace under time pressure, not language ability.
