What is the DLR test?
DLR — the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, the German Aerospace Center — is a national research institution that, among much else, developed and administers a pilot aptitude test system used in airline and cadet selection. If you are applying to a German or German-speaking carrier or cadet programme, this is very likely the battery you will face.
What sets DLR apart is breadth. Where cut-e samples a small number of abilities very intensively, DLR covers a wide surface: multiple spatial tests, several distinct memory formats, arithmetic delivered by audio, applied physics, English comprehension, and a sustained instrument-flying multitasking task. It is closer in spirit to a thorough psychological assessment than to a quick screening.
That breadth is why it takes longer, and why a single weak area is less likely to sink you than in a narrower battery — but also why there is more to prepare.
How DLR differs from cut-e and COMPASS
- Knowledge is tested, not just ability. The science and technical content is real, revisable material. cut-e tests almost none of this. If you have a physics background you have an advantage; if you do not, you have homework.
- Spatial reasoning dominates. Several distinct spatial tests — folding, rotation, embedded figures, route tracing — rather than the one or two a typical battery includes.
- Audio is central. Calculations and digit sequences are spoken, not shown. Listening accuracy is part of what is being measured, which catches out candidates used to reading everything.
- Selection is staged. DLR-based processes commonly split into a computer-based stage and a later stage with group exercises, interviews and sometimes simulator assessment.

The exact shape varies by programme, but DLR-based selection is typically staged rather than decided in one sitting:
- Computer-based testing — the aptitude battery itself, occupying the better part of a day.
- A second stage for candidates who pass — which can include group exercises, structured interviews and simulator-based assessment of basic handling and crew behaviour.
- Medical and administrative checks before a place is confirmed.
Reattempt policies for DLR-based selection are often restrictive, and in some programmes a result stands for a long period or permanently. That makes the first sitting unusually consequential and is the strongest possible argument against treating it as a trial run. Check the specific policy before you apply.

The spatial block: where preparation pays most
Spatial reasoning has a reputation as fixed ability — you either see it or you do not. That reputation is wrong, and it is worth understanding why, because it changes how you should spend your time.
What improves with practice is not raw spatial capacity but strategy. Faced with a cube net, untrained candidates try to visualise the whole fold at once, which is hard and slow. Trained candidates learn to track one or two faces relative to a fixed reference, eliminate options that contradict a single known adjacency, and never build the whole cube in their head at all. The same is true of rotation tasks, where tracking one distinctive feature beats rotating the whole object.
These are learnable techniques, and they produce large improvements quickly — often within a week or two of regular practice. If you have limited time, this is where to spend it.
How to prepare for DLR
- Establish the language of your process first. It affects everything else about how you prepare.
- Revise physics and mechanics properly. Forces, moments, pressure, motion, energy, basic electricity. This is straightforward marks and it is the part candidates most often skip.
- Drill the spatial tests daily, in short sessions. Concentrate on developing a repeatable strategy rather than on speed. Speed follows technique.
- Practise arithmetic by ear. Have someone read calculations aloud, or use the spoken practice tests. Working from audio is a distinct skill from working from a page.
- Rehearse the instrument multitasking task early and often. It is the component that improves most and feels worst on a first attempt.
- Listen to real aviation English in varied accents — live ATC audio is ideal preparation for the English component.
- Build stamina. A full day of testing is a genuine endurance demand; practise in long sessions in the final fortnight.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the science revision because it feels like a small part of the battery. It is the most reliably improvable component in the whole test.
- Practising spatial tests without a strategy. Repetition alone entrenches a slow method; technique is the thing to train.
- Only practising from the screen. Several DLR components are spoken, and reading is not the same skill as listening.
- Underestimating the day's length. Fatigue in the final tests is a common and preventable reason for uneven profiles.
- Treating the first attempt as practice. Reattempt rules are often strict and sometimes absolute.
